Kurta Pajama Definition

source (google.com.pk)
Kurta Pyjama refers to the set comprising a long shirt and pants that are everyday wear throughout India. And nothing is more evocative of summer to my mind than a kurta pyjama in white organdie with “Chikan” embroidery.
I personally don't wear kurta/pajama as I don't feel that its "baNa" baNa has a different meaning for everyone, some say its the 5 kakaars, some say its kurta/pajama, some say chola with no pajami, some say chola with pajami, there's no real definition or guideline as to what you can call baNa.

The best way is to look at this from a different angle and to try to understand the significance of baNa in the first place. baNa is a uniform, an identity that distinguishes you from the rest of the world. Khalsa has that identity and must maintain that identity in the world, we have a UNIQUE way of life given to us by our gurus, with a UNIQUE history unpararalled in human history, with a UNIQUE set of beleifs and ideas, we must also have a UNIQUE appearance that's why our baNa must also be unique. There are many who wear a turban but it doesn't classify as a dastaar, many who wear a sword, but it doesn't classify as a kirpaan, comparing in contrast with many who wear ornaments to our kakaars.

Here's some history on the two:

"Kurta/pajama is a design worn by men in northern India, Pakistan and many Muslim countries. The term 'pajama' crept into the English language originated from hindi, in India. The word originally derives from the Persian word 'Payjama' meaning 'leg garment'. It was due to the British colonialization of India that the term 'pajama' and the dress spread to other parts of the world. In India, one will often find politicians wearing white starched Kurta Pajama."

Chola is a sanskrit word designating body as well as a sewn garment also referred to as a a robe or cloak. Guru Saheb also says in baNee:
houmai maar nivaariaa seethaa hai cholaa ||
One who subdues and eradicates egotism, sews the robe of devotion.

The point I'm trying to make is that to stand out we have to be unique to relate to our unique values, beleifs, and history and therefore have a unique attire, be tyaar bar tyaar, wear a chola, and have hajooreeaa, shastars, etc. as part of that bana, be different than the rest of the world.

Kurta/Pajama is a recent trend that was spread by the british, and the same trend is seen in many gursikhs. In my view, wearing a north indian style design of clothing doesn't classify as baNa.

All I'm saying is we should reflect on how we live this lifestyle and have some reason as to why we do things and not jump on the bandwagon. The most important thing of all is we should concentrate on our jeevan, and jap naam, read extra baNee, and these small things will come into understanding on our own. yes, it matters.
Dastaar and rest of four kakaar are part of bana.
Historical references do matter to historians, but not to Sikhs who simply wish to practice Sikhi, meaning that when Panj Pyaaray tell us to keep a certain physical appearance (bana) then, we as Sikhs of Guru, are obligated to keep that Bana.

So, because it is Guru Hukam, Bana of a Sikh really matters, and Guru Hukam basically says to dress with all five kakaars at all times and keep the rest simple and modest and practical...

Of course, Sikhs do and should understand that Hukam is not limited to just Bana - there is also equally important Baanee. The understanding that we should have is that Baanee should lead to Bana, and Bana should reflect Baanee...
